Why do arrogant Humans think they're more powerful than Nature?

in the end, nature does not need us. We could make it very difficult for us to survive in the biosphere. We have destroyed a substantial portion of nature- try drinking water in a river in any city for example. History os filled with failed civilization that either destroyed their environment or could not adapt to what nature did.
