Polygon problem with all games?

Alright, this has been going on for a while, whenever I play a game on the PS3, I get these huge polygon spikes. They are a really dark grey, almost black, and they will extend from random places and basically go out into infinity. This is almost affecting game play because of the overwhelming amount of them blocking my view and such. Could anyone tell me how to solve this problem, such as any setting I have to change.
