What are the 2 fuctional groups in aspartame that allow it to be soluble in water? why??

Aspartame has a carboxylic acid and an amide group. In water, they can be inonized, either gaining or losing protons. Because these groups are polar, like water (a polar molecule), they allow aspartame to be disolved in water.
